A Milkman Tells the History of Elmwood Dairy

dean-palin-oct-19-2016
Dean Palin’s parents founded Elmwood Dairy. He worked in the family business, including as a milkman.

Remember the days when the milkman went door-to-door delivering milk? One of those milkmen was Dean Palin of Derby. His parents founded Elmwood Dairy. The dairy was first located on the Holland Road in Derby, a short distance from the village of Derby Line. In 1949, the Palin family built a new bottling facility on the lower end of the Derby Road in Newport (in the building where the North Country School of Dance and other businesses are located today). Today (Wednesday, October 19) Dean shared with me the history of the diary. He also shared with me a few photos in his collection, including those seen here. A future issue of the Journal will include an article about his memories of the dairy, including his time as a milkman.  I’m still looking for more photos relating to the history of the diary. Please email them to northlandjournal@gmail.com . Also feel free to share your own memories.  – Scott

The History and Loss of the Robillard Flats Round Barn in VT’s Northland Journal

This photo of the Robillard Flats round barn was taken decades ago.

The December issue of Vermont’s Northland Journal will include an article about the history and loss of the Robillard Flats round barn in Irasburg. Built in 1908 by George Metcalf, Guy and Helen Robillard bought the farm in 1960 (there were other owners in between) followed by their son and his wife, Bernard and Denise Robillard. The round barn burned on August 23 of this year.

For the last 14 years, the Journal has been the only magazine dedicated to sharing and preserving the history and heritage of the Northeast Kingdom. The monthly magazine, which comes in both print and electronic versions, is filled with stories of the Kingdom from an earlier time as told by the people who lived it. Each issue is also filled with historic photos of the tri-county region.

The barn was used for dairying until the end. This is an earlier view of the barn.

Craftsbury Survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima Passes Away

1864122_profile_picThe world has lost yet another WW II veteran. David Reed of Craftsbury died on October 11. He was a survivor of the battle of Iwo Jima. Not only am I fortunate to have known him, but he also allowed me to record his story in the pages of VT’s Northland Journal. Whenever our family hosted a WW II event, he was always there and willing to say a few words. He was a proud Vermonter, and a proud veteran. Rest in Peace, David —————- Scott

This is a link to my radio show, the Vermont Voice, in which David came on to reflect, at the time, 65 years back to Iwo Jima. Click HERE

Open Farm Sunday with the Birch Family

The Birch Family, who owns the Maple Grove Farm on the Bates Hill Road in Derby, opened their farm today as part as Cabot’s Open Farm Sunday. My wife, Penny, and I toured the farm and went on a hayride. And of course we enjoyed some Cabot Cheese. The Birch family were wonderful hosts! — Scott
