Life in the Northeast Kingdom Following the EB5 Debacle

clint-conley-channel-5-boston-sept-20-2016For those of you in the greater Boston area and beyond, come November, VT’s Northeast Kingdom will be featured on the Chronicle on Channel 5. The half hour show will focus on life in the Kingdom following the debacle of the EB5 Program, which included the Jay Peak Resort, the Burke Mountain Resort, and the airport in Coventry. Hopes were that the program would also serve as a catalyst to revitalize Newport’s Main Street. Journalist Clint Conley recently visited the Kingdom to interview a number of people, including myself. His purpose wasn’t to rehash the debacle, but to find out how the Kingdom is surviving economically and otherwise following the collapse. He also wanted to try to ascertain our level of optimism as we move forward into the future. This is a photo of Clint (left) interviewing me on the Newport waterfront. As for my level of optimism – I see so much positive going on in the Kingdom I can’t help but be optimistic. Besides that, being pessimistic isn’t going to get me or anybody else anywhere. —- Scott Wheeler/Publisher

Vermont 1970’s Counter Culture on Exhibit

maryVermont’s 1970’s counter culture is the topic of an upcoming exhibit at the Vermont History Center in Barre. This promotional photo for the exhibit was taken in front of the Frog Run Farm in East Charleston in the 1970s. It is of Mary (Houriet) Mathias and her son at the beginning of a hitchhiking adventure. In recent years, Mary wrote a multi-piece series about the Frog Run Farm in Vermont’s Northland Journal. Welcoming Natalie Hormilla to VT’s Northland Journal

nat-2In the coming months, Vermont’s Northland Journal will celebrate 15 years of sharing and preserving the history of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. What a ride it has been! In the lead up to this milestone, we plan to bring fresh, new additions and changes to the Journal. We have big plans for the coming year.

At this time we are excited to announce the arrival of Natalie Hormilla as our layout and design professional. She brings with her a high degree of professionalism and a keen eye for details. Natalie will certainly bring a fresh look to the Journal.

A graduate of Eugene Lange College at the New School in New York City, Natalie was the assistant editor at the Chronicle in Barton for five years. She lives in West Glover with her husband, Nate Gordon, where they operate Beach Hill Fitness. They have two daughters, Luna, who is almost four, and Solana, who just turned one.

Natalie joins an amazing group of people at the Journal – all who are dedicated to sharing and preserving the history of the Northeast Kingdom. We all welcome her as we enter this new chapter at the Journal. ———— Scott Wheeler/Publisher

For the last 14 years, the Journal has been the only magazine dedicated to sharing and preserving the history and heritage of the Northeast Kingdom. The monthly magazine, which comes in both print and electronic versions, is filled with stories of the Kingdom from an earlier time as told by the people who lived it. Each issue is also filled with historic photos of the tri-county region.
