The veterans who fought in the Korean War came home to a world that largely didn’t even know that American servicemen were dying in a foreign land. Many veterans who returned home from the Vietnam War returned home to a country that was at war with its self, and too often with the men and women who served their country in the far off land. Several months ago my family and I decided to recognize the sacrifices that the veterans of these two wars made for their country in what one could say was a Welcome Home party. It only made sense since we have always been supporters of this country’s veterans, including our family taking part in a fund raising effort to raise money for veterans who served in World War II to visit the newly unveiled monument to that war in Washington D.C. The Elks Lodge in Derby and VFW Post 798 in Newport joined us in the Korean/Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Day. The recognition day was a huge success. Veterans, their families, and the members of the community came from near and far to take part in the event. It was a time for recognition, celebration, and a time to heal. Instead of writing about the event, I have decided to share it in photos. Thank You to Everybody Who Helped this Event Become Reality | Winston Carbonneau was one happy man during the recognition day. His son, Franz and his fiancée, Gina Hong, traveled all the way from Kansas to be at it. Also seen in the photo is Winston’s wife, Regina. | Dennis Beauchesne of Derby, a Vietnam veteran and now former commander of VFW Post 798 in Newport, and his wife, Anita, were tremendous supporters of the recognition day celebration. | Governor Jim Douglas and his wife, Dorothy, were special guests. The governor shared his thoughts with the group and commended them for their service. | John Ferara of Westfield saw horrible combat in Korean. He brought a large amount of mementoes from his war years with him. John played in active role in making the event become reality. | Ken Jenness of Morgan is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He joked that he tried to enlist in the war in Iraq but they didn’t want him. | Arthur Prive of Newport served in the Korean War | Ad Taylor of Barton saw many tough days in the Korean War. | What a beautiful voice Celie Dagesse of Derby has. She sang the National Anthem and Lee Greenwood's song, Proud to be an American. | Members of North Country High School’s JROTC served as the color guard for the event. | Scott and Dennis taking part in the ceremonial cutting of the welcome home cake. | Korean/Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Day a Huge Success (page 2) Noble Benson of Troy performed Green Hills of Tyrol/When the Battles O’er” on the bagpipes. | The Welcome Home cake | Veterans brought momentos of the countries in which they served. | The Elks Lodge was filled with veterans, their family, and other members of the community. | The recognition day couldn’t have been a success without all the volunteers, including the members of the Newport Post of the VFW and their aullliary. Left to right: Anita Beauchesne, Denis Beauchesne, Gloria Reynolds, Shari McCallister | Dean Gonyaw served in Vietnam |
